Located about 40 km west of Jaisalmer, Sam Sand Dunes is one of the most famous desert destinations in Rajasthan, India, near the Indo-Pak border. It is a part of the vast Thar Desert. The area is a hotspot for desert safaris, cultural performances, and adventure activities, making it a must-visit for those exploring Jaisalmer.
The site hosts the famous Desert Festival every February, featuring camel races, folk performances, and traditional Rajasthani cuisine. It is one of the few places in India where you can experience a true desert safari with overnight stays in luxury or traditional desert camps.
Centuries ago, the dunes were a part of the ancient Silk Route, where traders traveled with caravans of camels carrying spices, textiles, and jewelry. Even today, some locals believe that on silent nights, you can hear the distant echoes of camel bells and footsteps of lost travelers.
The region around Sam Sand Dunes is home to fossils dating back millions of years, suggesting that the Thar Desert was once a vast ocean. Some fossils of marine creatures and shells have been found buried beneath the dunes, giving a glimpse into the desert’s prehistoric past.
