Big Buddha

Phuket,

Thailand,

Asia

Rising high above the island’s lush hills, the Big Buddha of Phuket stands as a symbol of peace, faith, and calmness that watches over both locals and travelers. Officially known as Phra Phutta Ming Mongkol Akenakiri, this majestic statue sits quietly on Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata, around 17 kilometers from Phuket Town. Visible from several corners of the island, it’s more than a sightseeing stop; it’s an emotional experience that brings a sense of stillness even before you reach its summit.

The Big Buddha is located in southern Phuket, in the Karon subdistrict, overlooking Chalong Bay to the east and Kata Beach to the west. The winding road that leads up the hill is lined with lush greenery, small local shops, and viewpoints that keep the journey interesting. Visitors can take a tuk-tuk, rented scooter, or private taxi, with the drive giving spectacular glimpses of Phuket’s coastline. The atmosphere gradually shifts from the hum of the city to the calm rhythm of temple bells and mountain breeze.

Standing 45 meters tall and 25 meters wide, the Big Buddha is crafted from white Burmese marble, which glows softly under the tropical sun. The statue reflects light beautifully during mornings; it shines like a beacon of hope, and by evening, it catches the last golden rays of the sunset. Surrounding the main figure are smaller statues, donation bells, and flags fluttering in the wind, all adding layers of devotion and serenity to the site.

While it’s a major tourist attraction, the Big Buddha remains a deeply spiritual place for locals. Many Phuket residents visit the Big Buddha to make merit, light incense, or write prayers on marble tiles used in the construction. The sound of soft chanting and distant temple music blends with the rustling leaves, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless. It’s common to see monks offering blessings to visitors—a reminder that this isn’t just a monument but a living symbol of faith and kindness.

After soaking in the calmness of the Big Buddha, you’ll find several local eateries and cafés on the way down the hill. The nearby Nak-Kerd Seaview Café offers Thai dishes with a stunning panoramic view. You can try Pad Thai, Som Tum (papaya salad), or a cool coconut smoothie while watching the ocean shimmer below. For a more local touch, small roadside stalls serve grilled chicken, sticky rice, and mango desserts that taste even better after a peaceful temple visit.

The Big Buddha stands not only as a monument of devotion but also as a collective effort of faith and unity. Funded entirely by public donations, it reflects the spirit of community and the shared belief of Phuket’s people. Facing the serene Ao Chalong Bay, the statue is positioned to bless the island with peace and prosperity. Construction began in 2004 and still continues with small additions, making it a living project of faith that evolves over time.
